The San Martín district is the tenth of the ten districts into which the city of Barcelona is administratively divided. It is located on the northeastern edge of the city and borders the municipality of Sant Adrià del Besós, and the districts of Ciutat Vella, Ensanche, Horta-Guinardó, and Sant Andrés.Today, the district is a combination of history and modernity, home to historic centers bustling with popular activity, centuries-old chimneys, and factories converted into studios, homes, and museums—such as Can Framis, part of the Vila Casas Foundation—and where designer office buildings and unique constructions coexist, such as the Agbar Tower and the MediaTIC Building.This combination of past and future is particularly reflected in the transformation of the old industrial Poblenou into the new technology district. This project involves combining economic activity (companies and offices) with educational activity (university campuses) and residential activity (street redevelopment and housing construction). An initiative dubbed "Compact City" aims to be the benchmark for the Barcelona of the future. Other projects that are changing the face of the district include the extension of Avinguda Diagonal to the Fòrum site, the remodeling of Plaça de les Glòries, the semi-covering of Gran Vía, and the development of the coastline, from the Olympic Village to the Besòs.
