Unicaja Banco, Carrer de Rocafort, 2, 08015 Barcelona, Spain
The Old Left of the Eixample comprises the part of this side of the district that was urbanised earlier, and which was already quite populated at the end of the 19th century. The original core is formed by the parish of Sant Josep Oriol, between the streets of Diputación and Urgell, and the building of the University of Barcelona (UB), built in neo-Romanesque style in 1882 by the architect Elies Rogent. From this initial complex, the neighbourhood developed above the railway tracks (MZA), around the core of Ninot, which was born in the 1880s in the shelter of a popular tavern. This establishment had a doll as a decorative element, which ended up giving its name to the entire restaurant and entertainment area that was located around an open-air market, a direct antecedent of the current one.The creation of the Hospital Clínic and the Faculty of Medicine in 1907, and the Ninot Market in 1935, served to boost the area and attract developers interested in building housing, especially from the 1930s onwards, with different styles and mainly aimed at the middle classes. Today, the neighbourhood is characterised by a great commercial, activity and leisure dynamic. Among many other offers, it includes those specifically aimed at the gay community.
