Centro de salud, Calle de la Isla de Mouro, 39140 Ribamontán al Mar, Spain
Mouro Island is a small rocky islet located at the entrance to the Bay of Santander, in Cantabria, visible from Somo beach. With an area of 1.7 hectares, it stands out for its steep cliffs and its lighthouse, built in 1860, which guides ships through the turbulent waters of the area. This 18-metre-high lighthouse is one of the main icons of the island, although access to it is restricted. The island, formerly known as Mogro, has witnessed several shipwrecks due to the harsh maritime conditions. Despite not having any notable vegetation, it is a refuge for seabirds such as seagulls and cormorants. Its waters, rich in underwater life, attract divers and nature lovers. Although it is not accessible to regular tourism, it is an important scenic and cultural reference point, visible from various points on the Cantabrian coast, such as Somo and the Sardinero beaches.
