La Pedreta, Carrer de la Marina, 271, 08025 Barcelona, Spain
Beyond the limits of the Dreta de l’Eixample, in the upper part, is the Sagrada Família neighbourhood, which was previously known as El Poblet. El Poblet was a neighbourhood that for many years had been reduced to fields with a small core of low houses located around the current Calle de València. It did not become a real entity until the early years of the 20th century, as a working-class neighbourhood around many industries. What gives it personality today is the Sagrada Família temple. It was commissioned as an expiatory temple and was designed in 1881 on land in the Sant Martí area, when everything around it was countryside.Gaudi Avenue runs through the neighbourhood, linking the Sagrada Família with another essential work of Catalan modernism: the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Both buildings have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.The Sagrada Família neighbourhood includes, at its lower end, the Encants neighbourhood, with the popular Bellcaire or Encants market fair. This area will be transformed in the near future by the remodelling that will affect the entire area around Plaça de les Glòries.
