Calle de Alfonso XII, 17, 28014 Madrid, Spain
The Retiro district takes its name from the vast El Retiro Park, a massive green space just southeast of the city center that dates back to the early 16th century. The surrounding area is stylish and upscale, with a number of shops, restaurants, cafes and fine hotels. The world-famous Prado Museum is located in Retiro, along with the National Museum of Decorative Arts and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which houses prime examples of European art from the Renaissance to the present. The park itself is likely the biggest draw, however, with hundreds of acres of landscaped paths, a huge lake where visitors can rent boats, the Fountain of the Fallen Angel, and the Puerta de Alcalá triumphal arch. El Retiro Park is also the setting for the Palacio de Velázquez Museum, which specializes in contemporary art, and the Palacio de Cristal, a museum modeled after London's Crystal Palace. Jerónimos is the swanky neighborhood that surrounds Madrid's beautiful El Retiro Park, and there's so much to see. This exclusive area has a number of high-end shops, restaurants, and cafes. Another highlight is Real Jardín Botánico, a lovely botanical garden that is perfect for a weekend stroll.
