The Retiro district takes its name from the vast El Retiro Park, a massive green space just southeast of the city center that dates back to the early 16th century. The surrounding area is stylish and upscale, with a number of shops, restaurants, cafes and fine hotels. The world-famous Prado Museum is located in Retiro, along with the National Museum of Decorative Arts and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, which houses prime examples of European art from the Renaissance to the present. El Retiro Park is also the setting for the Palacio de Velázquez Museum, which specializes in contemporary art, and the Palacio de Cristal, a museum modeled after London's Crystal Palace. Ibiza is a lively neighborhood just east of lovely El Retiro Park. The area is a draw for its incredible dining scene, with a variety of international and fusion restaurants, as well as traditional Spanish fare.
