The Plaza de España is a large landscaped area in the city of Madrid located in the Argüelles neighbourhood, in the south-east corner of the Moncloa-Aravaca district. In its centre is a monumental fountain dedicated to Miguel de Cervantes. It acts as a continuation axis linking the Gran Vía with the Calle de la Princesa. Until shortly before the construction of the Gran Vía, this square was called "Plaza de San Marcial". Among the surrounding buildings, the Torre de Madrid and the Edificio España stand out for their height, as well as an exponent of Madrid modernism such as the Casa Gallardo and the Compañía Asturiana de Minas building, the current headquarters of the Ministry of Culture.In addition to the Gran Vía, the streets Princesa, Leganitos, Bailén, Ferraz and Cuesta de San Vicente converge on the square. With a surface area of around 36,900 m², it is one of the largest squares in the country.
